Strong Silva to miss Abu Dhabi trip, Guardiola confirms

David Silva will miss Manchester City s training camp in Abu Dhabi as the midfielder spends time with his prematurely-born son, Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

Silva has been sporadically absent for Premier League matches as he regularly returns to Valencia to be with his family.

The midfielder will be available to face Stoke City in the Premier League on Monday but will not travel with the squad to Abu Dhabi, with Guardiola taking advantage of a break in City s schedule next weekend, his side having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Wigan Athletic in the fifth round.

And the Catalan explained how Silva is keeping himself fit during a difficult time in the influential player s personal life.

He s just strong. We ve said many times family is the most impor…

Germany v Mexico: Kimmich tips Werner to shine in Russia

Germany full-back Joshua Kimmich has tipped team-mate Timo Werner to make a major impact at the World Cup, starting on Sunday against Mexico.

Werner has supplanted Mario Gomez as the Germans first-choice striker and Kimmich, who has known the RB Leipzig man since he was 13, believes he has the ability to justify the faith shown in him by coach Joachim Low.

Bayern Munich star Kimmich said: I think he showed at the Confederations Cup last year and in the matches after that how good he is.

With his speed he is a weapon for us. I ve known him since I was 13 when we played together in the youth teams at Stuttgart.

For me he s a very important player for us and I told him that I haven t been part of a tournament where he wasn t the leading goalscorer.

Maresca defends Chelsea style as defensive errors cost Blues in Wrexham draw

Enzo Maresca accepted Chelsea are likely to concede goals through playing out from the back after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Wrexham in his first match in charge.

Chelsea took on the League One side – who are owned by Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds – at the Levi s Stadium in San Francisco, fighting back from 2-1 down to claim a draw.

Christopher Nkunku put Chelsea ahead after 35 minutes, but two defensive errors from the Blues were punished in the second half as Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott netted for Wrexham.

Bolton turned home after Lesley Ugochukwu failed to cut out Seb Revan s cross, before Josh Acheampong s error led to Marriott giving Wrexham the lead with a low drive.

Ugochukwu levelled eight minutes from time as Chelse…

Maradona´s ´Hand of God´ and the second coming – Argentina´s notable World Cup exits and lucky escap

After struggling in their first two games of the World Cup, Argentina need a win against Nigeria in the final group fixture to stand a chance of reaching the knockout stages.

Not even star man Lionel Messi has been able to inspire this Argentina side to a victory against Iceland or Croatia seeing a penalty saved against the former before a crushing 3-0 defeat to the latter.

Only a win against the Super Eagles will do for Jorge Sampaoli s men, who could do with group leaders Croatia avoiding defeat to Iceland, and it would be a huge shock if Argentina were to miss out on the last 16.

Here we take look at some of Argentina s most notable exits and lucky escapes at previous World Cups.

Aleksander Ceferin accepts fans faced ‘problems’ at Champions League final

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has admitted “not everything was perfect” for supporters at the Champions League final in Istanbul.

Manchester City supporters reported issues with transport to the out-of-town Ataturk Stadium for the showpiece match on June 10 against Inter Milan, as well as a lack of toilets and limited access to water.

Football Supporters Europe is gathering fan accounts from Istanbul in order to compile a report to present to UEFA.

Ceferin, speaking at the European Football Fans Congress in Manchester, said this year’s men’s and women’s club competition finals “proved UEFA had learned from past mistakes”, but he added: “We’re well aware that in Istanbul not everything was perfect and I’m certainly not playing down the prob…

Allegri warns Juve of ´broken bones´ ahead of Sassuolo clash

Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri has warned his players of the technical ability of Sassuolo, saying they will suffer metaphorical broken bones if they do not match them.

The Bianconeri are in a strong position to seal Champions League qualification, and could cement their place in the top four further on Monday.

Juve sit in fourth place in Serie A, five points ahead of Roma in fifth having played a game fewer, with the Giallorossi losing 3-1 at league leaders Inter on Saturday.

Speaking at a media conference on Sunday, Allegri said: Tomorrow it will be difficult because Sassuolo is a technical team, in an excellent position in the table and comes from a defeat.

We will need a serious technical game, otherwise we risk going out with broken bo…

How Joey Barton’s lengthy ban compares to other punishments in world football

Burnley midfielder Joey Barton

Joey Barton’s 18-month ban for breaking the FA’s rules on gambling has raised question marks about whether or not the punishment was too excessive.

The Governing body has claimed that the length of time given to the Burnley player could have actually been around seven years, and that the 34-year-old got off lightly.

The FA issued a report stating Barton made 15 bets on his own side to lose, and even though he didn’t take part in any of the matches, the minimum suspension outlined is six months per bet on one’s own team.

The ban effectively ends the midfielder’s Premier League career as he will be 36 by the time he returns to action, and will find it extremely difficult to resume the same playing standard as when …

Sancho and Reus doubts for Der Klassiker, confirms Dortmund coach Favre

Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus are still doubts for Borussia Dortmund s Klassiker clash with rivals Bayern Munich on Saturday, according to coach Lucien Favre.

Reus was absent for Tuesday s 3-2 Champions League win over Inter due to an ankle injury, while Sancho sustained a hamstring strain in the second half.

The pair have scored eight of Dortmund s 23 Bundesliga goals this term, while the England international also has five assists.

Both are at risk of missing the trip to the Allianz Arena, with Favre s men looking to keep the pressure on leaders Borussia Monchengladbach and potentially go four points clear of Bayern, who will be coached by Hansi Flick for the first time in the Bundesliga.

Favre confirmed Reus and Sancho will be assessed on Friday and seem…

Mane relishing Bayern ´challenge´ after bringing end to trophy-laden Liverpool spell

Sadio Mane says he achieved everything he could at Liverpool and is excited to embark on a new challenge after signing for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Mane has left Liverpool after a hugely successful six-year spell at the club, for whom he scored 90 goals in 196 Premier League games, a tally bettered only by Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy (104), Mane s Liverpool team-mate Mohamed Salah (118) and Tottenham s Harry Kane (134) in that time.

The Senegal international s six major trophy wins at Anfield included the Champions League in 2018-19 and Liverpool s first-ever Premier League title the following year, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup.

Mane had made his intention to join Bayern clear after scoring 23 goals in all competitions as Jurgen Klopp s …
